1.8 Z3?

Post by Fender2004 »

Was there a 1.8 Z3 as I'm sure I've seen one advertised.
If so, we're they sold here or will it be an import?
Thanks in advance.

AFAIK there was a 1.8 in the USA but in the UK the 1.9 M43 was actually badged (on the boot) as 1.8, it was on our first Z3 and caused some initial confusion with the insurers.

Are you thinking of going to Newby this year?

Unfortunately I'm sure we are away that weekend :head:
We'll have to do some better planning next time.

Thanks for the info

As far as I am aware, official RHD UK 1.9s were firstly the 1.9 (M44) 140 BHP followed by the 1.9 (M43TU) 118BHP. I believe that some earlier LHD European models may have had a 1.8 (M43) 115 BHP engine - some may have come to the UK and been converted to RHD. I'm not totally sure if the US had a 1.8 - I suspect they only had the 1.9 (M44) which was dropped at around the facelift time when all were then 6-pot only.

There was a 1.8 (M42) 140 BHP twin cam engine which was a predecessor of the M44 -I'm note sure if that ever found its way into the US Z3? I'd be interested to know for sure.

Just looked at the Oracle and the engines shown as being used in the Roadster (excl ///M) are:
Europe: 1.8, 1.9, 2.0, 2.2, 2.8 & 3.0
USA: 1.9, 2.3, 2.8 & 3.0

I think that if there is an actual RHD 1.8 (115 BHP) in the UK then it is more likely to be a Japanese import than a LHD to RHD conversion. A few years someone was contemplating converting RHD to LHD at the time I had my dashboard out. Looking at the layout it appeared that such a conversion would require a lot of structural work, amendments to the loom, etc.
