3.0i gearing

Post by Flight » Thu 05 Jul, 2018 15:25

I like my 3.0i immensely. I find it difficult to fault, it drives fine, handles well, it is quiet, smooth, slick gearbox, and is comfortable. All in all a very nice car. However my one gripe is that it should have had an overdrive to make long distance cruising more enjoyable. Just my thoughts. Could all who disagree form an orderly queue.

A friend fitted a six-speed gearbox from a 3 litre Z4, which gives about a 10% higher top gear. He is very pleased with it, and found that the only thing which needed modification was the front section of the prop shaft, which had to be shortened by 40 mm, a job which most prop shaft specialists can handle easily. It did not even need to be rebalanced. An effective and cost-effective modification.

I completely agree, as the 3.0 has so much torque and I’m always wanting to change up.. That’s exactly why they fit a 6 speed to the Z4.

Hunting around for a good six speed box, Can anyone tell me if it is the same make and layout as the Z3 box. That is having the shift pins on the top. I fitted the modified pins and Teflon bushes to my box, and the change is just about perfect, so I wondered if the six speed box might require a pin change.
Thanks
