Pool of water behind fuel flap

Post by Bumpa »

After all the rain we have had, there is a considerable pool of water behind the fuel flap on my 2002 Z3. I know this pocket is rubber lined so shouldn't rust, but surely water is supposed to drain away. How is that meant to be achieved?

At the bottom there is a small drainage hole in the rubber. This often gets blocked, if you put your hand in below the cap you should be able to feel it.

If you get a bicycle gear or old style brake cable that has a bullet end on it and poke it down the tube , that works or a plastic flexi rod. That’s what I use as it’s less abrasive. Also works for the roof drains.

Thank you Knighthawk. I don't know where the roof drains are either.

I sucked out all the filthy water from the fuel filler pocket with a Pasteur pipette (I was a lab scientist) and then cleaned out all the sludge. Lo and behold the drain hole became visible. However, I can't get anything to go down the drain tube. In what direction does it lead? Does it go straight down, or inwards then down, or back and down, or forwards and down? But I managed to blow through the hole and must have cleared a blockage because if I squirt some clean water in the pocket it now drains away and appears under the car. A result of sorts. It would have been nice to rod it out properly though.

Try a long thin cable tie.. Or a thin plastic knitting needle if you still knit... :D

Successfully cleared mine with a piece of garden wire but every so often needed re-doing so now I give it an occasional 1 second blast with the jet wash.
