For a couple of days it was driving me nuts and getting worse. Three suspects - rubbing of steering wheel on cowling (which showed visible vibration coinciding with the noise); friction around slip ring and finally the U joints on the other side of the firewall.
Decided to start with the easiest - but lubing the U joints did not do much. When the car heated up in the sun the squeaking got worse. Pushing and pulling the wheel has a dramatic effect - so it’s obviously contact with the cowling...
Is there a simple way to move the wheel a fraction of an inch toward the driver?

Re: Z3 steering wheel squeaking - SORTED
Added a hand fabricated spacer behind the metal grommet behind the steering wheel.
A nice little satisfying job.
