Temperature gauge position?

Post by Warrior »

I was always led to believe that the temperature gauge needle should, on reaching full operating temperature, sit perfectly vertical at 12 o'clock.

Mine used to and does eventually get there but sits at 11.55 for what feels like 2 or 3 times longer than before.

Anything to worry about?

12 o'clock is the normal position for a fully warmed up engine with the thermostat open. Maybe your thermostat is getting lazy and time for replacement, the lower reading you are getting maybe due to it not closing correctly allowing circulation to take place from a cold start thus taking longer to heat up and fully open the thermostat. If your going to replace the thermostat then consider putting in a new water pump as well as you will be stripping down that area of the engine.

Many thanks.

Performance seems fine and as i'm doing only a few hundred miles a year wondered if a good run would help matters...
