Transporting seats

Post by burmagirl »

Due to the difficulty of obtaining matching leather to mend my driver's seat, I have searched and managed to source some Z3M seats of the same colours as mine. These have got to be transported from Scotland down to me, and I'm hoping that people on here may have bought or sold large/heavy parts and can give me some advice as to how to get them here safely.

I'm guessing they are about 25kg each; they are within the weight limits of companies like DPD and ParcelForce but I'm not sure how the seller could pack them to comply with any rules they have. I'm not able to go and fetch them at the moment. I found a company in Scotland which could do it but they are geared up to commercial freight, only to one-day deliveries and are hugely expensive. I imagine they also have packing rules.

I got some cabinets off somewhere like facebook marketplace a few years back and used some sort of commecial man with a van service; that would be ideal but unfortunately I can't remember what they were called.

Can anyone give me any advice, please?

TIA

Do a search for 'Return Loads', websites set up for haulage companies, man with a van etc., who are based close to you and that do regular or occasional runs to Scotland. Hauliers use these sites to avoid having to return with an empty vehicle - better to have £50 to pay for some diesel than nothing.

You have a couple of options. Find a company close to you who delivers to the area you want them to collect from, or vice versa. Find a company close to the collection point who comes to your area. You may have to work with them and wait a couple of weeks to get best price as well.

Do your research and don't just go for the cheapest option. My brother wanted a car trailered over 200 miles, a round trip of 300 for one man with a van. You can't do that for the quoted £80!

Thanks for your response. In the end I remembered a company I'd used to collect some units 4 years ago; it was a company which worked on the 'man with a van' principle. I think it's expanded and been taken over since then but the principle remains the same. It was more epensive than I'd hoped for but they are collecting and bringing them down tomorrow - I hope all goes well!

The seller has been very communicative and I'm fairly confident that they are identical to mine in terms of the leather - always diifficult as he seems to have done exactly what I did and replaced the standard Z3 seats with Z3M sports seats and neither of us know the spec of the cars they originally came from - so it gives me a few options. I'm keeping my fingers firmly crossed!

Hi Sue.

Bit late to the party, but I remember that Pingu used to run a man and van type business, though I've not heard from him in ages.

Anyway it sounds like you are sorted. Hope the new seats work out.

Cheers R.

Thanks very much Robert, and everyone else.

The seats arrived fine, although it was a 2-day delivery in the end. In the course of rearranging the garage so we could get them in there temporarily, we came across my original seats which were behind a lot of stuff. I had forgotten that they were actually Z3 sports seats (I was remembering the original seats in the 1.9, which had the bobbly leather) so in fact the leather on the back and bolsters is the same as the z3m sports seats :dunce: ... I shall have to try and work out which would be most sensible to use, ie which are least likely to sell!
