HI ALL,
IM LOOKING TO BUY MY FIRST Z3, A 1999-2000 2.0, I WENT TO VIEW A VERY NICE EXAMPLE AT THE WEEKEND BUT THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS BECAME APPARENT ON INSPECTION OF THE CAR. AT HIGH REVS THE ENGINE SOUNDED QUITE THROATY (NOT A HEAT SHIELD PROBLEM), AND ON THE TEST DRIVE THERE WAS A FAIR BIT OF CLONKING FROM THE REAR AXLE ESPECIALLY WHEN CHANGING TO REVERSE. IN ADDITION THERE WAS A SLIGHT LAG ON THE THROTTLE BOTH WHILST DRIVING AND STATIONARY.
IF ANYONE COULD SHED SOME LIGHT ON ANY OF THESE PROBLEMS, HOW POTENTIALLY COSTLY THEY MIGHT BE AND WHETHER THIS WOULD DETER ANYONE FROM PURCHASING THE CAR, I WOULD BE VERY GRATEFUL. FOR INFORMATION THE CAR IS FOR SALE AT £9000 BUT THE OWNER WILL TAKE 8500 ALTHOUGH IT IS DUE FOR A SERVICE WHICH I UNDERSTAND COSTS AROUND £250.
ANY HELP WILL BE MUCH APPRECITED, G.

I don't like the sound of this. If you are serious about the car, I'd ask him to service it first then revisit it before you part with any cash.

Agree with the above comments 100%, if in any doubt walk away. £8500 is a lot of money dude! dont just throw it at the first one you see. dont fall in love with nice bodywork etc etc.
be very criticle about every detail, and dont do the deal on the 1st viewing. treat it like you ar buying a house!

Now Car less
All very much appreciated, I think what your saying is pretty spot on, funnily enough while this message has been up the seller has rung me up and offered it to me for 8000, thats a grand less than when we saw it at the weekend.
That woulkd be great actually BUZZ, if you could let me know where your based I could come over one night this week or on saturday morning. Like i said I havent actually viewed any others so im not sure what to listen for under the bonnet or whilst driving.
A friend of my old man who specialises in BMW engines seems to think that the 6 cylinder unit should be absolutely clean of all noises all the way up the rev counter but to expect some road noise through the back axle, especially if the tyres are worn which they are on this particular car.
Agree with R80TER too it is easy to fall in love with the car itself and overlook the problems, they are fantastic looking things inside and out.
Thanks for the help guys, any more advice grately welcomed.
