ABS Warning Lamp & OBD Reader

Post by Rocketman »

For the last couple of years my 1999 Z3M Roadster has initially failed its MOT due to ABS warning lit on dashboard. Each time it has been due to Near Side Rear ABS Sensor (which was replaced each time). A few days of driving after the MOT and the ABS light comes on again! I'm getting fed up with this and the car is again due its MOT and again the ASB light is on.

Can anyone recommend a OBD Code reader so I can view the failure code and then reset? It will help me if I decide to do some 'home diagnostics' on this particular fault.

I have also read some where that this can some times be caused by a relay in the Power Distribution Unit under the bonnet? and that replacing the relay can cure? Anyone got any comments.

Regards

iv read that it can be caused by weak soldering joints on the Power Distribution Unit.
it may well be that im barking up the wrong tree but its worth considering.
would it not be worth getting an auto sparky to have a look?
the badness makes me do it...!

find a garage for a proper code checking (or do it yourself if you have GT1/INPA/etc)

there can be many causes for your problem....so I think code checking is the best way to start with

I have repaired the ABS module myself before (i.e. the problem mentioned by swamper in his post)

Swamper,

Will that bit of kit operate on a 1999 Z3M, because I can't see any reference in the list of compatible cars? Looks like a great bit of kit if it does, appears to give 'all access' to the car.

IMPORTANT: Our packages are only suitable for BMW’s built between 1996 and 2007/03. Older models require a round 20 pin adaptor which is included with Package 2, this is generally applies to cars built between 1996 and 2001.

Sorry missed this

Yep, your M's will need the adaptor too.

It works on my Z3M with the adaptor and also on the M3 without. You also get a great version of the TIS that is loaded on the HD

Worth the dosh without doubt
