S54 M Roadster Census - Please help

Post by NorwegianBlue »

For some time now a few of us have been compiling a register of all the S54's in the UK. the intention being to provide help for new owners and a little light hearted interest for current owners of the cars. The cars are know as 'The 79' but we think there's only 73, so it will be interesting to see how many we can trace.

The S54 was the last production run of the M Roadster and was produced with a higher specification and brought into the UK in small numbers over about a year.

So, if you own, or previously had an S54, we need your help!!

Just to clarify, the S54 M Roadster are those produced from 02/2001 thru 06/2002 and will be on a Y plate or newer. No personal details will be published on the web, or given out without permission, we'll just be publishing generalities about the cars.

If you would like to help, the following is a list of the info I need;

1. Registration Number
2. VIN (last 3 digits i.e LB64???)
3. Exterior Colour (see list below)
4. Interior Colour (see list below)
5. Build date (on a plate under bonnet on left strut)
6. Date first registered

Exterior Colors (this may on a plate under the bonnet on right strut):
Alpine White III (300), Imola Red (405), Laguna Seca Blue (448), Titanium Silver metallic (354), Estoril Blue metallic (335), Steel Gray metallic (400), Phoenix Yellow metallic (445), Oxford Green II metallic (430), Black Sapphire metallic (475)

Interior Colors:
Black, Dark Grey/Black, Imola Red/Black, Estoril Blue/Black, Laguna Seca Blue/Black, Dark Beige

Don't post your details on here, send me a PM or email to LovelyPlumage at Hotmail dot com with your contact details. When it's complete, or as much as I can get, I'll send a report to all contributors and publish some info on here.

Many thanks,

Neil

Come on guys we need a few more to take part, don't shy

Even if you don't want to give all the details just give me a little so we know the car is accounted for.

All contributions are much appreciated. Thanks.

After having a few inquiries about the easiest place to find the info, hopefully the following will help;

The VIN is on show for everyone to see on your windscreen, bottom N/S corner below your tax disk. I just need to last 7 digits, so if it's an S54 the number will be LB64???.

The build date is usually on a black sticker, under the bonnet, on the left hand side on the strut (bulge).

The colour number again is on a black sicker, under the bonnet but this time on the right hand side on the strut. On mine it's in German but it does give the colour number (code).

Bit of an update

Post by NorwegianBlue »

Well it's been a while and we have managed to add a few to the list but there's still a lot more to go. So, if you've not sent in your details, please do try, it will be much appriciated.

So far we have details on 57 out of the 73 cars we think were made. Of those 57, we have 21 with VIN's and production details. The breakdown now looks like this;

8 Balck Sapphire cars (7 with Imola red interior, 1 Estoril)
16 Estoril Blue cars (6 with Black interior, 10 with Estoril)
3 Imola Red (2 with Imola red, 1 Black)
1 Laguna Seca Blue car
3 Oxford Green II cars
10 Phoenix Yellow cars (6 black and 3 kiwi interiors)
1 Steel Grey car
14 Titanium Silver cars (3 black, 3 Imola red, 4 Estoril blue, 3 dark grey and 1 laguna interior)

This is proving to be a lot slower than I'd hoped. To date I've only managed to trace 62 of the 73 cars. I have full details on only 34 so if there's anyone out there who has not contacted me, please do.

You could summise that after this length of time, some may have met a sticky end but I still find the odd one every so often.

Nick, if it was made (rather than registered in April 2002) it must be one of the last made :D

I would love to see some piccies, spec details :rtm:

RN03 YLS is Estoril with Black inside and was first registered in July 03. :nerd: :D
Not the last to be registered however. There is record of another Estoril registered in August 03.

And yes, actually, I AM a clever dick!
(Thanks Neil!)

Seriously though, that's incredibly low mileage and obviously one of the last if not THE last...(64134) to roll off the line, so looking forward to seeing the VIN.

Very special.

According to those wot know more than us....

The S54 RHD ///MR VINs run from 64000 to 64037 and 64100 to 64134 which adds up to 73 examples.
:nerd:

So Gazza has No. 30 of 73.
Nick has No. 72 of 73.
And Alfie has No. 7 of 73.
:D

Thanks to Nick for the VIN, that helps tick another off the list. Sadly it also means I now have 11 unknown cars.

So that means I have 11 cars where we have no record of registration nor VIN, however I do have Reg's and VIN's for 36 cars and still trying to match VIN's the 37 cars that I have a reg for.

My appeal to you all, is if you ever see and advert or even the car on the road, please do make a note of colour/reg/vin and let me know. Having started this project some time ago I didn't think it would be so hard to find them all but the info does come in usefull for new or potential owners and those of who just love our cars :)

So 38 MY 01 and 35 MY 02.
However to the letter of MY cars beginning in October of the preceding year, then in effect, there were 5 MY 00 S54's and only 33 MY 01.

Interestingly the 64000 was an April 00 build, 64001 was a May 00 build, 64002 - 64004 wereSeptember builds, then 64005 on started in November making them "official" MY 01 cars. Strangely there were none built in October 2000, the "official" month of the new MY.

64100 was an October 2001 build, making no anomalies in the MY 02 fleet.

Out of curiosity, was has a late model MY 00 S50??
I wonder if they produced S50's concurrently with the earlier S54 prototypes?

I was always led to believe that no ///M roadsters were produced for about 6 months whilst the new S54 were prototyped.

I don't know this for fact though. Would be good to get details of last S50 produced to confirm

There were probably a few S54 'mules' made at the beginning for testing purposes. I suspect they would need a VIN to be registered for road use in the UK

This may explain the few odd early ones with main production starting early 2001.

Not sure with the z3 ///M's but there will normally be a run of final prototypes used for publicity shots /press / product familiarisation. Often these come with some wierd options eg will have expensive options installed but some non optional equipment may be missing

I've discussed with Neil and contacted BMW UK to see if they would help complete the register / confirm details.

Not sure if they will be interested / what they are allowed to give but worth trying

It's been tried before, but the official response was that the information has been archived and it was not relevant or cost-effective for BMW to spend time searching for it.

Perhaps 'they' have a little more time on their hands these days and customer satisfaction has become more important, so hopefully you'll have more luck than previous enquirers!

Keep us posted please!

It's hard to believe the data has been archived. When I take my car in for a service and give them the VIN, they can tell me every last detail about my car.

The info from BMW we need is quite simple. For those cars where we have a reg, colour, etc all we need to do is match it to a VIN. Then there's the eleven cars that we no details for but again it's just a case of confirming they exist (I suspect some early VIN's don't), and if possible get a colour and a reg if they are being generous.

I suppose there's two ways to we could do this, one is to try and get on the good side of a local dealer and ask the manager if they would fill in the gaps. The second is BMW UK, this may be a good task for the BME Car club to do for us as they will have contacts but I guess this is most unlikely one to give results.

So, is anyone out there on first name terms with their local dealership principle?

Just for an interesting read on this subject, here's a bit of history:

http://www.zroadster.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7420

This was where the popularly accepted figure of 79 became 73.

I am on good tems with the parts department locally and have to go there this week to give them some more money (it feels like a gift when you see the size of the pile of money and then tiny plastic bracket they give you in return). If you PM me the VINs you need I will ask if we can get some basic specs (colours).

I'm not holding my breath but worth a try, they surprised me (in a good way) re the boot welds on my old ///M

I'm not sure they would give reg's and VIN for data protection reasons but anything from them would be great even if just to confirm actual VIN's that were made.

Re friendly BMW, the BMW club seem to have a good relationship with Sytners in Sheffield. I went to their open day there and they put on a great event, Sytners made it clear that they are actively seeking to work with enthusiasts to build there brand to more BMW owners.

Might be worth asking the car club if I get no joy. (I don't really have BMW car club contacts  )

BMW have acknowledged me email so fingers crossed :D

Redhill. Crawley upset me a while back over my wheels and I have not forgiven them yet. :(
