Wiring issue
Wiring issue
After some time of having the parts lying around, I got round to fitting the facility console and clock.
Everything going well until the point where I had to connect the analogue style clock ...
The digital clock I removed (the version with the small led screen with h and m buttons below) has a 6 pin connecter and the analogue clock has a 3 pin.
Now there are 4 cables going to the 6 pin connecter.
I picked up the correct 3 pin connection from a local scrappy that had a stripped out z3 including a decent length of wire.
My issue is that the three pin connector only has 3 cables going to to it.
Electronics not being my forty, I'm wondering can I cut and solder the right plug into the existing wiring?

Re: Wiring issue
Yes. You don't need the wire that is a switched with the ignition - you just need the permanent live, the ground and the one that is switched with the lighting circuit.
Re: Wiring issue
Ahh excellent bladerunner I think you've just saved a good couple headaches.
It sounds like you speak from experience here is this an issue you've came across?

No, just had a quick look at the wiring diagram!
Re: Wiring issue
Ahh well as I said the electrics is not a strong point of mine.
The diagram I had showed me the connection to the old clock being the three pin. Threw me right off when I seen the 6

Re: Wiring issue
I've managed to get the 3 pin connected spliced onto the wiring. The clocks now working my only issue that it doesn't keep a constant feed.
When the ignition is off so now is the clock. Seems strange as its the existing clock wiring. Does anyone know if the clock has an internal power source that needs a bit of a charge from a decent drive?
Or anyone know how id get a constant feed through it?

Re: Wiring issue
Looks like you connected wire 5 to connector 1 instead of 6 to 1.
Hope that helps

As blade runner said 'You don't need the wire that is a switched with the ignition - you just need the permanent live, the ground and the one that is switched with the lighting circuit.'
Red/yellow stripe is permanent live
Grey/Red stripe light feed
Brown Earth
The violet/white stripe is the switched supply
Hope this helps
Mac beat me with the diagrams whilst I was sorting out the colours.

Page 2 of the symbols gives the colours and you have to work back through the power distribution and fuse location diags, that's what took me so long.Mac The Tank wrote:No worries; where did you get the wire colours from??
