Fitting cruise control
Fitting cruise control
I have a 2002 Z3 3.0 M Sport.
Looking at past threads on the subject, the following seems to apply, on the post facelift Z3.
a/ there was a BMW kit to retrofit cruise control but it's obsolete in the UK. It is still listed in the USA (part no. 65710007353) if you want to import one.
b/ However the parts are still available separately from BMW UK
c/ The part numbers are 65718380054 (interface unit) and 61318360926 (switch, column)
d/ These are the only parts needed, and it's easy to fit, although you have to make a hole in the steering column shroud for the switch. However there's a marking on the inside of the column shroud to guide you when making the hole.
e/ No ECU re-coding is needed, so it does not have to go in to a dealer. Just fit the parts and it works.
Can anybody confirm the above, so I can order the parts?

Re: Fitting cruise control
Done this on mine earlier this year, stalk from eBay but interface unit rarely comes up on eBay so bought it from dealer.
Re: Fitting cruise control
Is it really as simple as you guys say?
Where does the interface fit and how much would the two components be?
I'm keen to add this facility to my 99 facelift 2 litre as my 525 touring and the wife's 330 touring both have cruise which we use all the time.

Re: Fitting cruise control
It's only that easy on cars with fly-by-wire throttle control. I did this to my 2.2 Sport 52 plate car and the biggest problem was finding the connector for the interface as it's bound up in the loom under the dash. As has been said, stalks come up occasionally on the 'net, and the interface can be had at reasonable cost from BMW dealers. I got mine mail order from Soper BMW in Lincoln - discounted price and f.o.c. p&p.

Re: Fitting cruise control
Yes that easy - interface fits under the steering column trim - if you pm me your mobile number Ill send you a pick (my 2.0l) is currently in bits so easy to show you. As mentioned before, stalks are always on ebay - interface not so often but easily bought from BMW dealer - wasnt expensive £30 ish If I remember. See the link http://www.zroadster.net/forum/viewtopi ... =18&t=8000 and scroll down to estocks post Sun 23 Apr, 2006 10:58 for pictures and part numbers.rambo wrote:Is it really as simple as you guys say?

Re: Fitting cruise control
I ordered the parts from BMW.
The total cost was about £120. I think it's worth the money, if it works of course. I had cruise control on my Porsche 928 S4 and used it a fair bit.

One thing, that link shows a third part needed, a "knob" at about £5.
The switch comes without the knob, and you have to order it separately.
Part number is 61311390968

Re: Fitting cruise control
The "knob" is just the end bit for the switch - specifically in English. The stalks on Ebay come with it already on. Not sure if you have bought it all brand new from BMW
Re: Fitting cruise control
Sadly yes l did.
But l made a few hundred from the sale on ebay of Lotus parts (my last car was an Elise S2) so that's covered most of the Z3 parts l've bought so far.

At least it will be shiney and new let me know if you need help when fitting, if I remember rightly my wire for attaching to the interface was taped up to the right of the steering column as you look at itlightning wrote:Sadly yes l did.

Re: Fitting cruise control
Thanks very much for the offer of help.
However, l got on the job today.
I now have cruise control fitted and working!
It's easy to use, and more "friendly" than the one on my Porsche 928 S4, on that if you pressed "resume" it seemed to use all the 310 horses to get you back to the preset speed as fast as possible.
Nearly went up the back of somebody the first time l tried it.

Re: Fitting cruise control
Tried to get cruise control fitted to my 97 2.8 auto by a local german car specialist (ordered from a breaker) who has fitted it and can't get it working. He tells me that he cant get it to send/receive a signal. I had it in 4 Mondays in a row with him promising to get it working, he's now given up! German car specialist my ( . )

Re: Fitting cruise control
Dis you get and fit all the parts listed below as the M52 2.8 is not fly by wire and needs a lot more parts.
So I've done some digging on OEMand come up with this list:
1 CONTROL UNIT F CRUISE CONTROL 1 65711387625 $651.79
3 CRUISE CONTROL ACTUATOR 1 65718369027 $320.12
4 BRACKET F CRUISE CONTROL SERVOMOTOR 1 41148401744 $5.53
6 Hex nut with plate M5 3 65718372353 $0.57
7 BOWDEN CABLE F CRUISE CONTROL 1 65718380083 $25.07

Thanks Brian We did talk about the clutch switch, I'm unsure if he ordered one in, I'll have to double check on that.

Yours is slightly more complex.... More parts but all plug and play. Took me about an hour and half on my 1997 M See the thread below but use realoem to ensure you get the correct part numbers. I got everything from eBay except the throttle cablePierrick wrote:This seems too easy to be true!

Thanks for the reply and for the link.
I was starting to get interested by this as it seems cheap but apparently it is a bit more expensive for my car... I may start to have a look at some second hand parts.

90£ is a very good price! I'll definetly do it if I can find everything for this price!

Re: Fitting cruise control
Check out eBay USA too.... I have found 2 cruise control column levers on there for around $20 a piece. New clutch switches are very cheap there too, and the actuator and cable often are sold together, so you can get a complete unit. Only other item is the brain box also on eBay USA and the mounting bracket for the actuator. Mounting bracket is cheap enough new from BMW if your car doesn't have one already fitted.
Re: Fitting cruise control
Hi all, I removed some of the driver side trip and...
I can't find any connector for the switch attached to the stearing column.
There is the right bracket for the clutch pedal switch but no connector as well...
it doesn't look like I can instll cruise control to my car!

Re: Fitting cruise control
Unless your Z3 was the only one fitted with a different wiring loom, I would say you have to look harder...
Re: Fitting cruise control
You get a great sense of satisfaction when you finish your project and, bugger me, it works.
After following everyone's advice and took off the column shroud and the dash panel it all fell into place.
The plug was hanging free.
Fitting the switch lever was so easy after having cut out the hole in the shroud ( which is marked out on its inside) the lever slides into a plastic receiver clipped to the column.
The Interface slides into a similar receiver further down the column and the mutiplug when connected also has a housing for it to slide into.
Dead easy when you have finished but you do need to get down and under the dash to see it all.
Total Cost
Interface from Marshall BMW ( Grimsby) £52.21 inc 10% discount
Switch lever from Atlanta Europa Auto Parts in Kenneshaw ,Georgia, USA ( via E Bay ) delivered for £36.72 making it in total £88.96.
My Z3 is a 2.0 litre facelift so has fly by wire.
Many thanks to all who helped me with advice on this project!!
Keep up the good work.
Regards
Mike

And I believe that the original options list price was north of £1,000
no wonder they were making a good profit as at these prices - cost to produce must be tiny!

Re: Fitting cruise control
the connector is taped to the wiring loom down the right hand side of the bonnet as you stand in-front of the car. Honestly, the link I sent you is thorough and a small amount of common sense (not being patronising) will find everything. My car has had far too many customisations which made finding some of mine a little bit harder but when you have the parts you quickly realise the wires you are looking for to make the match. The wires etc can't be moved so they have to be in the place your looking forPierrick wrote:Ok, well, i'll keep looking!

Re: Fitting cruise control
I had a good look around the steering column again today... and no connectors found!
I can't fint the connector for the cruise control switch and I can't find the connector for the connector for the clutch switch!!
I folloed the loom everywhere, and with my hand where I can't see. There are no loose connectors anywhere!
Were ALL Z3 fitted with the same loom? This is strange!

Yep - all identical. On one of mine, the loom end was tucked away more towards "under the headlight switch" but still under the steering column trimPierrick wrote:I had a good look around the steering column again today... and no connectors found!

Re: Fitting cruise control
Mine was almost hidden in the helical 'bandage' around a thick bundle of cables.
Re: Fitting cruise control
I've taken off almost everything on the driver side... instrument cluster, head light knob, frog lights... so I can see all the ends, no cables left... and no sign of these connectors!
Is it possible they are behind the heater unid? or behind the glove box?

Re: Fitting cruise control
Hi, I have fitted cruise control to two pre facelift cars now and did not have the troubles you are experiencing finding the connectors.
A couple of things to look for just in case you have a rogue early loom or something similar. The connector for the actuator unit is very easy to find without taking anything apart so if you don't have that....well may be something is amiss. This is a multi pin plug that is cable tied to the loom in the engine bay,, its on the right hand side just in front of the fuse box and the rim around the edge of the plug is a purple colour. (If you have got hold of an actuator then you will see the socket it plugs in to). With my first Z I had the most trouble getting and then attaching the mounting bracket to the inner wing. The M cars seem to have had this welded in the shell from the factory but others need to get a bracket from BMW and then get busy with the drill and some bolts.
Another large plug is the blue one that attaches to the brain box that you have hopefully sourced. The box slides into an empty metal case behind the glove box. The plug is light blue and massive with a kind of clip affair to hold it securely into the female half of the connection attached to your polished aluminium brain box.
The connector for the CC switch itself is not loose and flopping around under the column, it is tied up close to the left side of the column so you should be able to see it and recognise the empty brass connectors waiting for the matching part on the end of your stalk cable. This has about 6 connecting pins in a row.
The clutch switch plug is indeed a bit trickier, but if you have the clutch switch then you will see that it is essentially the same as the brake light switch that is already in place. Therefore you know that the loose end you seek is the same as the one plugged into the brake switch. Its quite small, just two pins in it from memory.
Hope this helps
Steve

Re: Fitting cruise control
Well, I truly think my wiring loom doesn't have any of them plugs... I think I'll undo the glove box and have a look behind just to make sure but I don't have much hope.
The only think troubling me is that everyone seems to thing ALL wiring looms are the same.
For those who are wondering I'm an electrician and I've been working on my cars since I had my first car at 18.
It's not like I was afraid of taking things appart or if I did't know what I was looking for.
I honnestly think I can't fit the cruise control to my car.
But if someone want to have a little trip in Milton Keynes and have a look... you are welcome.

I am assuming you also have the cruise control interface as well as the Stalk? If it is like the later models the stalk plugs in to the interface and the interface plugs in to the car.Pierrick wrote:Well, I truly think my wiring loom doesn't have any of them plugs... Hi Brian, I didn't buy any of the parts yet but I read a few thread on this forum so I know what the plugs looks like.
Until ifind all the right connectors I don't intend to buy any parts.

Just a though, is you car a standard UK spec car? I know there were a few tweaks/differences for different countries?

Well... don't really know do be honnest! I far as I know it is a UK car...
Number plate is R447CGJ chassis number LD82913. Every time I went on real eom it seems to say it was a UK car.

Re: Fitting cruise control
Did anyone check the start date for cruise control retrofit on realoem? Some options, like rollhoops, cannot be fitted to the very early cars because they lack the necessary preparations - in the case of rollhoops it is cars built before 01/97.

Just has a look on RealOEM and a couple of the parts are shown as 07/96 onwards, so it looks like they connectors should be there on a '97 car. The link is for an 01/99 M44. Nothing changes with an '97 car selected.
