I have been using a fully automatic car wash near to me for the two years I have had my Z with absolutely no problems to the mohair hood, so I wouldn't have thought some soap suds would harm it!

Hi Rafolian. I was thinkg more in the line of the chemicals in the soap suds/detergent breaking down the proofing agent. After all is said and done it is only a form of Silicone.
Most notably the best of all for proofing a wide range of materials is Fabsil.
That said many years ago I was an Amway agent and they had a product that could be sprayed onto a Kleenex tissue and when dry it could hold water like a plastic bag. That demonstrated that nothing would go through that which was treated - including a paper tissue. That product was/is called Dry-Fab.

Spoke to one of the guys at the garage since he wasn't in when I called.
No further forward really, car is still cranking to the point where it sounds like it's going to start but doesn't actually start. The lad told me he's ordered a camshaft/crankshaft sensor... Not sure which one (if indeed there is both) the line was very poor and your man was difficult to make out.
He did say that it was showing no error codes though, which he found strange. I didn't get round to asking about the clocks or the LCM module, I'll maybe call back this afternoon see if I can speak to the main man.
Thing about he EWSIII though, the car I took the modules from had both the module under the steering column and the black module behind the glovebox. He appears to have got round the immobilisor issue though... Maybe

I have now got a hardtop for winter protection of the Mohair Hood and for what I think might be a generally more comfortable winter experience.
Although I have invested in a Renovo Kit I have not yet used it and I actually have a rather large amount of Fabsil that is still usable but it needs brushing on.
The idea was to clean and reproof the Mohair Hood during late summer and then fit the hardtop for the winter from about mid/late November (UK).

Hi, you can only use a second hand ewes unit if you also use the original keys that the unit had, even then the units and keys need coding.
Ewes units can not be recoded.
Buy a new one from bmw, use the car originally keys. It might start straight away but if not a specialist with autoloic or bmw dealer can code. Half hour job at the most.

I bought a new EWS (White box under the steering column) from BMW and it's been coded to the car and all immobiliser faults have now gone.
Car is cranking over and over until it does eventually start but only for a couple of seconds before cutting out again. It'll do this all day long according to the guy working on the car. It does throw up a camshaft/crankshaft (can't remember which) sensor fault so a new one has been ordered (Again from BMW) to be here before the end of the week hopefully.
I've to call him at the start of the week for another update. I'm home 3 weeks Sunday, he HAS to have it running for then surely...

Euro car parts do both cam and crank sensors a lot cheaper than the stealer!!!

I'm actually offshore at the moment and calling the guy every few days for updates so not really in a position to ask him to use pattern parts. Also, the cars been off the road for 13 years and just after a fairly extensive electrical overhaul so I'd like to know the right parts are being used for the car.
I've heard mixed reviews of pattern parts, thanks for the heads up though.

SHE'S RUNNING!!!
He got her running over the weekend there and it appears to have been the clocks stopping it from running. He tells me he hasn't coded the clocks, somehow got the immobiliser and all lined up without the clocks, installed the clocks again and it's starting everytime, on the button.
My only worry is that tamper dot now. I've asked him to have the mileage corrected and let me know about the tamper dot. He still insists used clocks cannot be recoded and new ones are £700 but I feel I may be contacting John Leacock for further advice.
Well chuffed is an understatement, he says she's running like a dream. Hard to believe it's sat for 13 years, without electrical power never mind run.

Not much of an update but today I spoke to the mechanic who still has the car. He told me he had the car out for a 'test' drive and tells me it's going well, everything very tight as it should be for a 4000 mile car. Gearbox, clutch and even brakes felt ok although the brakes do need some use/tidying up which is on the list of things to do when I get home. There is a slight wobble coming from the rear but I put that down to a badly buckled wheel on the N/S rear which will be repaired during refurbing.
Even electro/hydraulic the roof is working fine.
I've got it booked into another guy to get the clocks and LCM all coded up and she'll be ready for the MOT.
Oh, also found out tonight that I might be getting off here 2 days early, so that's a bonus.

Well, time for another update.
Got the car home today, starting and driving well. Nice and straight apart from a slight wobble at 60mph, which I'm putting down to a bad ding in one of the back wheels, which I'm been told will repair.
I shaped at overhauling the brakes this afternoon. Got new pads but knew the discs were in good shape, just needing a scratch with some 120 emery pads on a grinder. One side done...
Rear disc with caliper removed
Handbrake shoes are original (1998) and like new...
Front drivers side with all off
Rear drivers side finished
Front drivers side done
Once the brakes are done, couple of other wee things including that back wheel but main thing is to get mileage corrected before booking it in for an MOT.

Cars going up for the MOT this week now that I have the logbook back and a couple of small niggles sorted. Just need to give it a wee service tomorrow, Oil, Filters etc and give it a good wash underneath. No more interesting photos unfortunately, fingers crossed for the MOT though, should be ok.

Well guys, now I'm on my way back offshore thought I'd take a couple of minutes to let you know how the car got on at the MOT.
Very little to say really, she sailed through her 1st ever MOT with only 4479 miles on her, now taxed with a further 300 miles on the clocks, she hasn't missed a beat.
Slipped a new battery in her yesterday since I felt starting was a bit sluggish from time to time but now flashing up straight away every time.
Plans for next leave include tidying up the wheels of a few kerb marks and sorting the paintwork since receiving a few storage dings over the 13 years of storage.

Great news on the MOT, I trust you got the clocks recoded with the correct mileage? I can't remember if I read what had started the fire in the first place?

Yes, everything now 100% spot on. Even the Mrs enjoys driving.
One thing I've noticed though, the clutch is very heavy. Heavier than I remember it being in my E36 M3, could it be needing bled?

On the subject of batteries, I fitted a new one to my Roadster since during the work I was carrying out on the car, I was using an old battery from the Wife's golf.
£60, but couldn't tell you make and model. Was from a local motor factor, but after me being at sea for 6 weeks and the car never used, it started first time without as much as a hiccup. Even after an full re-loom, the car appears perfect with no obviously electrical drains. Well chuffed.

I thought since it'd been nearly 2 years since I updated this thread, I would update it with a couple of new photos and a mechanical update.
Got the little lady out for a spin quickly but once I realised you can't deactivated the passenger airbag, I decided against it. Excuse the 2 series active tourer, it was my local dealers idea of joke while the CSL was in getting a power steering line replaced.
Dug the car out for the first this year, which I am ashamed to admit but lets be honest, the Summer has been garbage and the good days have been used doing other constructive things about the house, or I've been stuck offshore. Got it washed ready for this years MOT which is passed having covered 42 miles since the last MOT.

I did have the car out one day a fortnight ago and it really was such a nice day, I thought the car could do with AC. Popped into my friendly tyre place, Tyre Safety centre of Cookstown who agreed to fill the system with oil/gas taking about 45 minutes to see if we could get the AC to work. I was watching the wee machine do it's business with a keen eye during the vacuum test. It took the system down to -990mb and held it there for 2 minutes with it fluctuating between -956mb and -991mb which passed the test before oiling and gassing the system up.
Once fully gassed, to say i was chuffed to feel very cold air from the vents, hear the load on the engine with the compressor and see the extra fan spinning away is an understatement, had to call Dad to give him the good news. Left the car for a few days while at a family members wedding, come back the Sunday evening to move the little car and it was still very cold so only time will tell. Considering I had the matrix apart inside the car, I was surprised at no leaks (so far) but then it is only 2 connections with one screw if I remember correctly.
Little lady using it as a climbing frame while I try to weather proof the roof.
Other than that, must overhaul the front brakes again as I think the drivers caliper is sticking again. And seriously considering new discs all round as I think a front one is warped due to aforementioned sticky caliper. Bodywork still needs freshened up and wheels need done, and braided clutch line to be fitted. Winter project perhaps. Just enjoying the wee car, still turns some heads for an older lady and can still shift when it wants to.

Admittedly it's not very arty but I was worried enough about my neighbours giving me further abuse without shifting cars around the driveway, turned out alright though I have to say. I just wish I'd taking more when I had the V8 M3 (before the F10) too, I could slap myself.

Not much of an update, other than to say I haven't used the car in about 3 years. Since finishing the car 4 years ago, we've had 3 kids and of course being a 2 seater, I don't enjoy the car on my own to be honest. I can see it sitting in storage until the oldest girl is old enough to come out with me to meets, runs, trackdays etc and I can enjoy it again however, I hope to get it out at least once a year to blow some cobwebs away.
Saying that, it's sat in Storage since MOT July 2018 but good, dry storage and is doing no harm where it's at. I do need to overhaul the brakes again as I feel a sticking caliper has warped one of the front discs, might do that one winter when I'm out enjoying the caravan.
Good having a wee nosey around as haven't been on in a while between work and kids really, see you around maybe this visit will reignite my love for this wee car.
