KL's 2.8 progress

Post by kl-bmz3 »

Well I took the plunge and got myself a z3.. I had a e30 325i sport a few years back and passed it onto my son as a classic car investment which I'm pleased to say has increased by £1000 in value. This model is a 2.8 and was owned by a family friend.

I wanted something for the show season and with very little to do ...for a few hassle - free months at least (fingers crossed).

Well it hasn't disappointed.

I'll let the photos do the talking and I'll post a few updates of works in progress

as purchased

It has to stay under its cover for a few months till I get a carport erected

Managed a couple of tidy up photos before setting out to my first show

and at the show parked up

went to a disused petrol station to take some photos, not quite sure my photography is up to par but here goes..

I wish the price of petrol was today, what it showed on the pumps when that station closed down :)

Have done one small job that a fellow enthusiast told me was worthwhile.. fit risers to the front of the seat rails.

I seen a kit someone was selling but seen that they were threaded jointers, so ordered some off -bay .. Stainless steel M8 jointers.

They definately tilt the seat base back giving an inch or more legroom,as I had the seat as far back and down as it would go.

A straight one would surely be more rigid. That strut brace looks like it was meant for a 1.9. :shrug

Montreal Blue, superb!

The alloys were on the car when I bought it. Only 200 mile put on them.
They were ordered from 2 sets of M3 and M5 BBS, from memory 9" on front and 10" on rears

Should have went down the route of a straight one I know, but .. suppose cost factor came into it and got that one

Getting ready for MOT time and I started at the rear.. Took out the spare wheel and was shocked by the condition of it. Obviously it hadn't been out since new. The extension tube used to inflate it from below was seized onto the valve, I cut the tyre valve to get the wheel away from the cover. Then took the wire wheel brush and after 1/2 an hour was left with loads of rust..

Also went in and cleaned away rusty areas, treated them with some rust agent and will prime and paint as well, cleaned diff casing and a coat of silver helps with the look

Finally got the back window replaced. It was cracked before I bought it last year, then over the winter I managed to put another two cracks in it. Sent the old one off to Croydon Soft Tops who replaced the PVC into the original zip. With a little help from the better half who volunteered to re-sew the stitching that was rotted away the window is in and all back together. Happy days now a good polish and ready for April

Lovely looking motor, i especially like the wheels, suits the car nicely.

When i removed my spare wheel, i chucked it straight into the rubbish dumpster. it lasted about 700 meters on my car when i needed it. :dunce:

Has anyone went to the bother of removing the front number plate when at a car show, in order to get a cleaner look to the front. Have seen quite a few doing this on different models when at shows. Was going to take off the number plate anyway causes is crooked. As long as I'd remember to put it back on before driving off, :) which Ive seen people do when using show plates

Yup, I took of the front plate and mount on my first Z3 I had. Very much cleaner look. Going to do the same to this one I have now when it comes time to repaint the front bumper.

also done a fleece cover, for when being folded, think it helps when the bar goes across the middle.Held in place with magnets sewn into the hem

comparing the two photos of the front when at a show with the number plate removed.. Got good reviews from people that it made the car look more appealing and stood out from others.

see what you think

Hi,
Are you sure the rims are 9j front 10j rear?
I can't fit an 8.5j on my 2.8 on the front, tried it and to fit 10j on the rear is a big op if the offset is high,I know,I've done it.
If you could confirm I would be super grateful. Thanks in advance.
What size is your rear tyre?
Also, very nice 2.8 in a great colour :D

The rear tyre size is 255 35 18 and fronts are 225 40 18 and no rubbing arches whatsoever.. they were on the car when I bought it so I only know that the fronts were spec,d for a x3 and rears an x5

The dreaded ABS light came on, so started to test the sensors with multi-meter and found the front had no reading and was considered faulty. What a bugger to remove, ended up driving it out with a punch. When I was at it, the rust that gets in around the back of the disc got a treatment of chemical and a top coat of paint.. Ended up replacing the sensor on other side too. After a half of a mile on road test the MIL light went out. Job done

Great work KL - I'd be interested in your thoughts on the strut brace now you've had it fitted a while. Is it a noticeable improvement?
