Baked on brake dust

Post by dazthephot »

I’ve tried the normal off the shelf Halfords cleaners but my wheels are in a terrible state. I’m keen to avoid a full refurb of each wheel until I’ve tried something proper.

So are there any cleaners that actually work?

Use Autosol and a cloth! Hard work. If you can't buy/find Autosol, it is a cream for polishing chrome. Anything to make chrome shine again will work. I've used Autosol with good result.

Bilt Hamber Autowheel https://www.bilthamber.com/auto-wheel is brilliant! Spray it on, wait until it's purple, hose it off. Done.

Ah thanks guys much appreciated. As for oven cleaner who’d have thought!!!

It seems that most of the valeters use wonder wheels but only if they have to. I thought it was just another consumer product that didn’t work.

I’ll try your suggestions first though.

It is an OEM Z4M Coupé wheel. It was very badly marked with brake dust and the Bilt Hamber stuff simply dissolved it off. I did several sets:

My X-Type Jaguar winter tyre wheels which were very second hand

and my son's track day wheels - also fairly rough.

A pro job... for export to Australia where it now lives.

Quick product review. Wonder wheels is useless. Time for the bilt hamber.

I've tested, yes, it works great. Maybe not a method you use every time, bit if the dirt is hard and old, it is great. The difference is that you really have to use car shampoo to take away the oven cleaner including the dirt, or high pressure water.
I noticed that oven cleaner will not take away asphalt dots, just dust from the brakes.

It simply did nothing to remove the stains on the wheels. I did exactly as the instructions said but unfortunately to no effect.

I’ve scrubbed these wheels to within an inch of their lives and still have the same dark streaked stains. I’ll post a picture later.

I’m sure this product is good for light stains and brake dust that isn’t as old as mine.

I'm sorry to hear that dazthephot, it was little short of miraculous on mine. Brake dust seems to get deeply embedded in the surface and this stuff simply dissolves it.
