Mudguard front right all brittle and broken - replacement part ?

Post by pkg »

Hi all,

while repairing a crack in my right front fender (yes, my Z1 also gets old...) Idiscovered that the mudguard (I hope that's the correct term) is all brittle and unfortunately broke into a large number of pieces so is not repairable. A new one costs over 260 Euro from BMW. I am hoping someone has or knows someone who has a "parts-only" Z1 where the mudguard is still useable ?
Part number 51712290053, right front inside fender plastic panel

Thanks

Peter

Hi Peter

Welcome to the forum, I would be most surprised if you could find a "parts only Z1" and if you did the part you need would doubtless be as bad as your existing is. The front inner wheel arch liners tend to break when removing the front wings, most are like chocolate now. I've just had my rear liners replaced, and it would appear that my fronts may have been replaced by a previous owner as they are a different material and still pliable.

The good news is the parts are available from BMW but the bad news is they are expensive!

There is a lot more work (cost) involved in replacing the front liners than the rears... depends on how good you are with the spanners. Good luck with this and let us know how you get on.

Hi Green Genie,

thanks for the advice, I ordered a new mudguard and it has been fitted now - as is my front fender now nicely repaired ! All happy but a bit poorer.
As you said, the old mudguard was like chocolate :)
Haven't shaken the left one as it lmooks intact and I'd rather keep it a bit like that... but surely will have to be replaced in the near future.

Hey.
Have changed the mudguards years ago but now the fender right has a crack.
How dit you repaired it. New is very expensive and look for alternative.

Hi Cabrioot,

I located a body shop that specializes (or at least has plenty experience) with plastic car panels, as well as having access to "old" Z1 specialist mechanics. Car was taken care of expertly and not only has the crack been repaired but also the inner side of the fender has been reinforced.
Repair was done (inclusive of materials) for 600 euro, mud guard and fitting 400 extra.
