Removal lower bodypanel

Post by bluejay »

The driver's side lower body panel is very close to the door panel when opening, It actually has scratched the door at one point.

I would like to remove it and see if I can modify the position or the body panel(???), any tips on how to remove? I want to do this before I have the door panel re-sprayed.

Thanks

You do realise that this is a Z1 and not a Z3....

Slightly different car.

Robert,

Don’t know if this link is of any use to you?

http://bmwz1.co.uk/ziki/doku.php?id=bodywork

It would be great if someone could post a YouTube tutorial on how to remove /replace panels for the Z1 :D

Robert,

Those instructions miss the first important step of removing the small plastic cover in the rear wheel arch before you can slide the side panel towards the rear to remove.
Be careful also when sliding the panel rearwards, of pulling the bottom of the panel too far out from the car, as the two plastic engagement forks on the panel are fairly fragile!

Good luck

Pat is correct about the small covers on the wheel arches which keep out the dirt and grit. If you break them removing the lower panel be aware the L/H side is available from BMW but the R/H side is on back order with no known delivery date, as I found out when my rear wheel arch liners were replaced by my specialist and both covers went awol!

Ignore the price shown they are a lot more expensive than that.

Well spotted gents, must get that sorted.

Once the panel is off, check for dirt or warping and clean thoroughly, if necessary light sanding.

If panel is warped adjust the hangars, there is some forward/backward movement at both ends, but mind the gap so it’s not noticeable against adjoining front and rear wings.

Closer examination of the door, comparing it to the passenger side, shows that the door is off by abt 1cm outwards.

Been in contact with RKV in Netherlands to get it sorted... hopefully soon, so I can get it looking nice again!!

RKV carried out the repair, the previous repair was done badly and it took some work to get everything working and lined up properly again.

Door opens and closes super smoothly now, great job done by Rene and Edwin!

Moral: Have your doors properly serviced (i.e. cleaned, greased etc) at least every five years and don't let just anybody work on them!

I am looking to do the same thing and my driver's side is bowing slightly.

Look what I found.....

(coming from the indexed http://www.bmwz1.org/Reparaturanleitung ... index.html)

What joy! :)
This should sort you out very nicely for this and everything else.
I did buy a copy of this a one point but have not found it during moving yet!

@jimblespud

The body panel was not the problem, the previous repair on the door was done badly... it was "made to work" rather than a repair.

Off course when I confronted the previous guy with it, it was too late and they took no responsibility at all, why am I not surprised
