Boot lid stuck
Help, I have a 1998 2.8 Z3 and the boot lid locking mechanism seems to have malfunctioned. Have not had previous problems. Had placed item in boot went to open it 10minutes later and cannot open. When operating remote key you can hear the lock servo operating. Key also operates but doesn't release boot. I am sure nothing got trapped around the latch. I might be imagining it but seem to remember reading about a emegency release mechanism iside the car but I don't know where it is! If so please could someone enlighten me or tell me what I need to do to gain entry.
While on the boot area I recently bought the chrome finger lift for lock, it needs a much large hole does antone have fitting instructions.
I look forward to any help anyone can offer, hopefully not " go to your local dealer with £500.00"
best regards
Mark

Mark, I have just done a search on here as this has come up before. It sounds like the link rod has come off the actuator for the boot lock mechanism. The poster, El Tel, took his car to the stealer for it fixing and it sounded expensive. Try phoning any independant BMW specialists near you first before taking the plunge (and your cheque book) to the dealer. Good Luck.
We all have a photographic memory, just some don't take the lens cap off!
Mark, as Andy said I had the same problem which was the linkage coming adrift. I tried everything but had to take it to the dealer. They found it difficult but did do the job, I think it took them a few hours. From the marks I think they tried to go in behind the rear badge but I am not sure of that fact. Good luck, Terry

Z3 Boot Lid
Thanks Andy
Was looking through on line parts list www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts which details an emergency release mechanism kit as a retro fit item see 51247059959, From the diagram I cannot quite understand where the emergency handle is located, I guess mine doesn't have it!! Maybe worth fitting,
I guess I will have to get professional help and will contact indi dealer as suggested
Thanks Mark

emergency release
Hi, you might find emergency release fitted to most U.S. spec cars, not just BMW as an escape mechanism for somebody locked in the boot.
Yeah, I know the Z boot is really small, but it probably came about as a result of a law suit!

Hi guys, i have the same problem, boot was all working fine but now it cant be opened with either the key or remote , I have a t reg 1.8 badged z3 (which aparently is a 1.9?) could someone please please please send me the details of how to do this emergency release thingy, phoned the local $tealers and the wanted to charge half hours labour £44 plus vat just to have a look at it! any help would be hugely appreciated
Hi spook_uk1,
I am not certain, but the emergency release sounds like the one for the petrol filler cap on the later models. I never quite figured out the thing on RealOEM which seems to imply a handle for opening the boot - which is only useful if you are locked in the boot. AFAIK the boot lid is solid behind the badge, so removing it would give you nothing other than two very small gromit holes!
PM Jon Miller and ask nicely for some help!
Cheers R.

If you send a PM to Spokey or Stu I beleive they know the way to get in.
For obvious reasons it won't be posted in the open forum!

Re: Boot lid stuck
Ok - there are others with more detail. I'm sure I have read a more detailed one previously on .net but cannot find it at the moment.alanandjudi wrote:Seen that U tube clip, was hoping to get something a bit more precise, from the guys on here that have carried out the procedure. Thanks

If you PM me I can advise. There is a convention on the forum not to share this info to the whole world (i.e. Non forum members) for security reasons.
2001 Z3 2.2 Topaz Blue (Trudy) - Keeper rebuilt from a write-off
2002 Z3 2.2 Titan Silver (Cookies) - Keeper rebuilt having been bought with a seized engine
2002 Z3 3.0 Sapphire Black (Peanut) - Keeper awaiting rebuilding having been bought as an abandoned project
Plus Willy, Kodak & Maycee - All 2.2 Sport projects. Yes, 6 is a lot of Z3s
Always happy to try and help with spares

Re: Boot lid stuck
Hello All,
I see you have helped people before with the dreaded boot locked problem on the Z3....Would you please forward me the way to get the boot unlocked-before ~I use the dreaded drill method....
Many thanks,
Nat
I was wondering if you could explain why this has happened...?...
3 days agao I decided to get the boot lock to activate the central locking..After some investigation I found the red/green wire to be broken in the loom of doom...After this was fixed I found the boot to unlock all central locking when using the key in the boot-great! However, 2 days later I come to use the car and find the battery was dead..?..I managed to open the boot manually, but then stupidly slammed it shut-which then lead to it not being opened at all with a key. (This is also the reason why I believe the arm has fallen off the actuator)
After jump starting the car from the engine terminals I also noticed the drivers door would not unlock either-the button would go up when using the inner door handle, but the door remained locked.....I am wondering:
A...Would the arm falling off the actuator in the boot, leave the boot actuator in an 'on' position-which would lead to the battery being drained?
B...Why can I not now get into the drivers door?
C...How can I get into the boot to pop the arm back on..?
